Is Your Smartphone Making You Stupid? #smartphone

The idea that smartphones are making us dumber is not a new one. With the increasing ubiquity of iPhones (AAPL), Androids(GOOG), and Samsung (SSNLF) Galaxies, much has been writtenabout how an addiction to checking our smartphones can basically fry our brains. There isn't any hard evidence that proves that smartphones are bad for our neurological functions, however. Rather, researchers argue that our need to be constantly checking our BlackBerry(BBRY) screens or updating Facebook (FB) during dinner is turning us into shallow thinkers and emotionless zombies. "Staring at screens constantly takes you away from people and gives you a passive outlet where you don't have to interact with the world," Cary Cooper, professor at Lancaster University in the UK, told The Sun. "Like television, the light draws you in and numbs your senses."Now, as the "smart" trend expands to include machinery around the house and office, researchers have begun discussing a new fear about the technology's impact: its threat to our ability to make autonomous decisions. Evgeny Morozov, a social scientist and author of the forthcoming To Save Everything, Click Here: The Folly of Technological Solutionism, argues that what's most worrisome about "smart" technology is that while it starts off with the intention of helping us improve our lives, it can end up taking over. In a recent essay for the Wall Street Journal, he highlighted the example of a "smart" kitchen where "tiny countertop robots inform us that, say, arugula doesn't go with boiled carrots." Such an invention, he argues, would basically kill culinary creativity.

Draft Profile: Potential No. 1 Pick Nerlens Noel

In the run-up to the 2013 NBA Draft on June 27, the BDD staff will be profiling several projected lottery picks and other draft entrants. Next up: Nerlens Noel. Nerlens Noel has the size to be great in the NBA, but how will his recently torn ACL hold up? ( CenterCollege: KentuckyDraftExpress Prediction: No. 1 in the first round, No. 1 overall to the Cleveland CavaliersSynopsis: He was expected to be an Anthony Davis lookalike in performance and in leading Kentucky to possibly a second-straight NCAA Championship. Nerlens Noel wasn't a dominant as Davis and his Wildcats were wildly disappointing, but Noel still made a name for himself last season, especially on the defensive end. His 4.4 blocks per game put him as one of the best in the country, while also grabbing 9.5 rebounds per game and just generally putting fear into any opponent who thinks of himself as brave enough to drive to the paint on Noel. On the offensive side, his game is certainly not terrible, but it has a long way to go. Noel averaged 10.5 points per game on 59 percent shooting from the field, but he only took less than seven shots per game. He is going to have to be more aggressive on the offensive end. Then there's the knee. The second Noel flew at the basket against Florida you knew it wasn't good. The torn ACL put him out for the rest of the season and we still don't know what kind of shape the knee is in. The team that drafts Noel will know it may take more time for Noel to get back to his former self, which is asking a team with a very high draft pick, who is bad and one would assume wants to improve right away, to be patient. Noel will still be a top three pick, and potentially the No. 1 pick, mostly based on his size and physical attributes. It's hard to pass up a guy who is nearly 7-feet tall with a 7'4" wingspan and has the athletic ability, especially on defense, that Noel possesses. It will take some time, both for the knee and the growth of his offensive game, but the team that takes Noel is thinking about the future, and he could have a solid future in the NBA.Quote to note: "We're talking about a No. 1 pick who's a defensive savant, but he can't score and is injured. Offensively, he has a long way to go. He scores off activity level, not skill level. And we can't forget he's hurt. We're not talking about a sprained ankle, you'd be drafting a guy who just tore his ACL. No one said, 'I don't think Greg Oden will pan out.' This is more unusual. For a top draft pick, he raises a lot of questions." - Jay Bilas on Noel via USA Today.Follow @BeatsDimesDrive on TwitterLike Beats Dimes and Drives on Facebook

What the Supreme Court’s Decision Says About Our Voting Rights and the 2014 Elections

There’s been mass hysteria in the liberal and civil rights communities over the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act—and rightfully so on some levels. It does signal an uncertainty toward our right to vote.  Whenever there’s talk of possibly giving some the right to infringe on our voting rights, it can be a very uneasy feeling.  Especially when you consider the nationwide attack Republicans have been waging for the last few years as they’ve pushed for stricter voter ID laws which are clearly targeted at demographics that often don’t vote for them. But what the Supreme Court essentially said when they made this ruling was that it’s up to Congress to craft a new “Section 4,” so to speak, that’s based on recent data—not information from 50 years ago. Voting rights in the hands of this Congress?  Now that is terrifying.  Knowing how they have a penchant for getting nothing accomplished, it probably won’t happen. My main issue with this goes back to the old cliché, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”  The only challenge I could see by anyone against our Voting Rights Act are those state legislatures who wish to discriminate—yet were prevented from doing so due to this piece of legislation. Section 4 wasn’t infringing on anyone’s rights, unless you consider their “right to discriminate” as a valid right. Now, was it based on decades old data that’s currently not accurate?  Yes.  But that doesn’t mean that some of those very same issues still don’t persist today.  Trust me, while racism might not be “as bad” as it once was, it’s still a major issue.  And it’s only been amplified after the election of President Obama in 2008 and the disgusting derogatory racial remarks I’ve seen used against him. When a man like Rush Limbaugh, someone who House Speaker Boehner briefed with on his debt ceiling plan in 2011 before introducing it to his conference, can call the president a “magic negro” or “Oreo” (both racially derogatory towards African Americans)—yet still be very popular within a party and still remain on the air due to this popularity, that speaks of the racism that still exists. Trust me, I live in Texas—racism is alive and well in the South, and in reality the entire country.  It’s just hidden slightly better than it used to be.  I’ve gone “undercover” (meaning I didn’t tell anyone I was a Democrat) to a few Tea Party rallies, and believe me, the N-word isn’t frowned upon at the ones I’ve attended. But what I feel the Supreme Court has done is it’s given Americans power. What their decision has said to me is that the 2014 elections have never been more important. If the Supreme Court wants to put it back on Congress to craft a new provision in the Voting Rights Act, which prevents discrimination based on current data, it’s imperative that liberals get out and ensure that in 2014 Democrats take back control in the House and gain a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. We can no longer continue to allow Republicans to blatantly obstruct any progress we might see in this country, all just so they can pander to their base in hopes of winning their primaries every election cycle. Liberals must stand and say loudly, strongly and forcibly, “We’ve had enough!  We will no longer allow ignorance to dictate our rights in this country.  We will no longer stand quietly by while conservatives try and eradicate decades of progress.”Because if Congress is to decide the future of the Voting Rights Act, it’s up to us to ensure that Congress isn’t controlled by a Republican majority.  It most likely won’t be decided during this Congress, so it’s up to us to make sure the 114th Congress actually cares about equal rights across the board. And I’ll be damned if I let Citizens United, this Supreme Court decision, stricter voter ID laws or any other ruling keep me from doing my part to ensure that in 2014—we take this country back from Republican ignorance. But the question is, who’s with me?  By Allen Clifton Stay On The UpnUp

Vote in the first People's Rock Hall Sidemen Election!

Sidemen Election nominees the Funk BrothersThis month, the People's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is celebrating a milestone, as we begin our 20th election.  As a way of celebrating this "anniversary", we will begin having special elections which will occur on a rotating basis starting this month. Before we have our regular three week election period, we will have a special one-week period where we vote on one of four different categories. This time around we are looking at sidemen and session musicians. In coming months, we'll also vote on songwriters, "oldies" artists who need a second look, and non-performers. After doing votes on all four, we go back to sidemen again. Anyone elected in these special elections will join that class of inductees as a full member of the People's Rock Hall. Our first 15 nominees for the sidemen election are listed below along with a brief explanation of why they are noteworthy. You will probably notice that some noted sidemen who emerged in the mid/late 60s onward are not on this list. Since this is our first sidemen election, we are starting with those who were active in the early years of rock 'n' roll, and will add some later names when we cycle back again to our next sidemen election. So all you Mick Ronson, Mike Bloomfield, and Nicky Hopkins fans, don't worry, they'll get a shot next time around.HOW TO VOTE: Below is a list of fifteen candidates for the People's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Select up to six of them (minimum three) and post your ballot either in the comments section of this post or on the People's Rock Hall Facebook page.
