Williams and Williams have great starts in New York

The Williams sisters, looking ready for New York, both advanced in the opening day of the U.S. Open. Venus, whose hair--yet again--was fabulous, beat Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-2. Serena went her one better, defeating Francesca Schiavone 6-0, 6-1. Following that night match, the younger Williams sister appeared (in a sharp Nike blazer) on the set of ESPN and chatted for quite a long while with commentators.There were no surprises today, and that includes the fact that Sloane Stephens had to fight like crazy to pull out a three-set win over Mandy Minella, who has become somewhat more threatening lately. Stephens might think twice before permanently adopting this Thrill Ride (and I do miss her, by the way) style of tennis (also makes me think of Kvitova), in which she grabs the victory at the last moment. But she did advance to the second round, beating an obviously crushed Minella (who was up a mini-break in the third set tiebreak) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. Stephens' next opponent will be Urszula Radwanska.Besides the Williams sisters and Stephens, other USA players who won their first round matches were Jamie Hampton, Coco Vandeweghe and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.Ayumi Morita withdrew from the tournament because of a back injury, and Olivia Rogowska became the lucky loser. Alyssa Kleybanova had her first win at a major since the 2011 Australian Open. The Russian player, who had to leave the tour for a while because of illness, defeated Monica Puig.The U.S. Postal Service has issued an Althea Gibson commemorative stamp, which became available to postal customers on Friday. Gibson won the U.S. Championships (the precursor to the U.S. Open) twice.

They have very valid points but due to people being scared in the house  no one will make the move to vote out Spencer. I had this long blog where I had so much information about all the "conversations" in the house for campaigning and decided to wipe that out. You know all about it by now and if you don't then hit me up and I will link you to the conversations where I typed them all out. This season it seems that if you go against Amanda in any way that it's taken as a threat. The only thing it threatens is her game. No one is flat out threatening a person. Maybe production should put in the rule book a glossary for the HG's to read and highlight  the definition of THREAT and BULLY. I'm so sick of people misusing  words in that house. Threatening is when you go to a person and say "I'm going to punch you in the face if you don't move." But when you say "Hey, if you vote out this person you know they/he/she are coming after you next" is NOT a threat it's stating the obvious. Everyone is going after everyone in the house so why are they all pissy about  being told that they will be sought after? All of these HGs, except Elissa have made physical threats against the other HG's behind closed doors. That is why they are so quick to call another HG out on anything that might rock the boat on their game play or game move or future game.I expect some flack from this but understand this is just from a GAME PERSPECTIVE.You cant bully someone in the house. You can be stern with them as if you were scolding a child but that's just about it. NO ONE has someone in a corner twisting their arm asking them for their lunch money. I think Amanda has a very stern way about her and so does Helen  and both have been referred to as bullies inside and outside the house. While it's all ok for everyone to trash talk Elissa the moment that she  has a conversation with Andy and explains details on what will happen or might happen when Helen leaves the game Andy spouts out "don't threaten me" It was not a threat it was a statement and soon to be a proven fact!  Elissa can only talk so much before someone comes into a conversation and dissects a small portion to yet again stir the pot. Elissa has sat back and taken it all in and knows who she wants to talk to  and who she doesn't.  Andy also didn't say anything about being threatened by Elissa and Helen in the HOH until Amanda was there (thanks Eric yeah we talked about this! ) Why didn't they tell Amanda to leave. Would that have been bullying? Hell no! But I'm sure that Amanda would have twisted it to sound like it was.  Everyone already knew she wasn't voting for Helen to stay so she didn't need to be in the conversation or room. And so what if she is being talked about of course people are going to say you manipulate  people because she is. This is the first season i have seen in years where  someone cant campaign for themselves with out the word bully or threat being used. Being assertive is not being a bullyHaving an opinion isn't being a bullyStating the obvious isn't a threatElissa knows she can not trust anyone and  she must win comps from here on out. After seeing her compete in OTEV they should all be scared of her in any physical comp. This went on for a few hours with several conversations all through the house but everyone apologized  and the outcome will be that Helen will be evicted 4-1 Thursday's Predictions: When Helen goes to walk out  that front door it  will be locked and Amanda Aaryn Gina Marie Spencer and Mccrae's faces will drop,  Andy will be sobbing in a corner knowing he just blew his game and Elissa will definitely  be jumping for joy.They have already decided to throw the HOH comp but that will most likely change since Spencer wants to win it along with Gina MarieIF Helen wins the return comp  she will be out for blood and all that I LOVE YOU crap will go out the window and she will be ruthless. Plus it  will give even more drive to Elissa to win the compIf Judd comes back Spencer will think he's got him as an automatic partner but I don't see it that way. I see Judd going after AarynIf Jessie comes back in I see her teaming up with Elissa If Candice comes back look for Amanda to try and welcome her with open arms but Candice to shut her down. Clarence House have denied that Kate Middleton and Prince William's dog, Lupo, was the animal responsible for emergency services being called to the Middleton family home in Berkshire on Friday.The royal household confirmed that Lupo, a black cocker spaniel, did not get his head trapped in a gate, which resulted in an animal rescue team arriving at the Middleton's £4.85million Georgian home. Lupo has been the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's dog since December 2011 when he was born to the Middleton's family dog, Ella.The couple have showered Lupo with affection and have been spotted walking him in Hyde Park and took him to a polo match in Ascot last year.It is believed that Lupo is being looked after by Kate's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton while she now waits at Kensington Palace in the days before she gives birth.  Click link for full post from Hello Magazine.

A thought I've wondered about, from a commenter at reason.com (BOR = Bill of Rights):The argument was that if you didn't have a BOR, the government might some day say we had no rights. But if you did have a BOR, the courts might some day say those are the only rights we have. So there was a lot of debate about the need for a BOR.IN the end, both sides were proven right. Without a BOR, I have no doubt we would be like the UK and have no rights. But with one, we are stuck with only those rights the courts think the document protects.A later commenter came up with the right answer to this question:I thought we were talking about people who act in good faith. Yes, you can make a case for it, but you are left with making a practical case that it is a good thing. But that puts you down on the level of utilitarians. The argument you want and need to make is "all men are created equal and have equal rights no matter what the good or bad effects". You want that to be a first principle. That way you are not down arguing on a utilitarian level. That way you can tell fascists and progs to go fuck themselves with their dreams of Utopia, because even Utopia cant' justify breaking a first principle. But without God or a higher authority, why is that a first principle? That is where the argument gets tough because progs and fascists come back and say "but equality is a first principle".

What the Supreme Court’s Decision Says About Our Voting Rights and the 2014 Elections

There’s been mass hysteria in the liberal and civil rights communities over the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act—and rightfully so on some levels. It does signal an uncertainty toward our right to vote.  Whenever there’s talk of possibly giving some the right to infringe on our voting rights, it can be a very uneasy feeling.  Especially when you consider the nationwide attack Republicans have been waging for the last few years as they’ve pushed for stricter voter ID laws which are clearly targeted at demographics that often don’t vote for them. But what the Supreme Court essentially said when they made this ruling was that it’s up to Congress to craft a new “Section 4,” so to speak, that’s based on recent data—not information from 50 years ago. Voting rights in the hands of this Congress?  Now that is terrifying.  Knowing how they have a penchant for getting nothing accomplished, it probably won’t happen.My main issue with this goes back to the old cliché, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”  The only challenge I could see by anyone against our Voting Rights Act are those state legislatures who wish to discriminate—yet were prevented from doing so due to this piece of legislation. Section 4 wasn’t infringing on anyone’s rights, unless you consider their “right to discriminate” as a valid right. Now, was it based on decades old data that’s currently not accurate?  Yes.  But that doesn’t mean that some of those very same issues still don’t persist today.  Trust me, while racism might not be “as bad” as it once was, it’s still a major issue.  And it’s only been amplified after the election of President Obama in 2008 and the disgusting derogatory racial remarks I’ve seen used against him. When a man like Rush Limbaugh, someone who House Speaker Boehner briefed with on his debt ceiling plan in 2011 before introducing it to his conference, can call the president a “magic negro” or “Oreo” (both racially derogatory towards African Americans)—yet still be very popular within a party and still remain on the air due to this popularity, that speaks of the racism that still exists. Trust me, I live in Texas—racism is alive and well in the South, and in reality the entire country.  It’s just hidden slightly better than it used to be.  I’ve gone “undercover” (meaning I didn’t tell anyone I was a Democrat) to a few Tea Party rallies, and believe me, the N-word isn’t frowned upon at the ones I’ve attended. But what I feel the Supreme Court has done is it’s given Americans power. What their decision has said to me is that the 2014 elections have never been more important. If the Supreme Court wants to put it back on Congress to craft a new provision in the Voting Rights Act, which prevents discrimination based on current data, it’s imperative that liberals get out and ensure that in 2014 Democrats take back control in the House and gain a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. We can no longer continue to allow Republicans to blatantly obstruct any progress we might see in this country, all just so they can pander to their base in hopes of winning their primaries every election cycle. Liberals must stand and say loudly, strongly and forcibly, “We’ve had enough!  We will no longer allow ignorance to dictate our rights in this country.  We will no longer stand quietly by while conservatives try and eradicate decades of progress.”Because if Congress is to decide the future of the Voting Rights Act, it’s up to us to ensure that Congress isn’t controlled by a Republican majority.  It most likely won’t be decided during this Congress, so it’s up to us to make sure the 114th Congress actually cares about equal rights across the board. And I’ll be damned if I let Citizens United, this Supreme Court decision, stricter voter ID laws or any other ruling keep me from doing my part to ensure that in 2014—we take this country back from Republican ignorance.
