THE GATES OF DEATH

A friend of mine, a religious sceptic, asked me  a while back if I think the Church will survive.            The problem with the question – he had in mind, I think, the dispute within the Church of England about women bishops: today, of course, it would be Same-Sex Marriage – is that by the word ’church’ he and I mean completely different things.            The question, in fact, is a bit like asking if God will survive.  If God is real, then the question is not worth asking.  If God is not real, then the question becomes not one of truth but of utility: is the ideaof God useful enough – socially, morally, politically – for the idea to survive?The same then applies to the Church.  Is the Church divine or human in its origin?  Is it the mystical bride of Christ, or is it a human institution: unquestionably useful in the past, but less definitely so now? Perhaps a few analogies would be helpful at this point.In the film El Cid the Cid is fatally wounded by an arrow, but to announce the fact would be to demoralise the Spanish army and encourage the Moors.  He is therefore strapped up dead onto his horse and rides out at as usual at the head of the army and to victory.            This solution, of course, is limited to the duration of the battle.  At some stage, someone apart from the perpetrators is going to realise the reality.  That is the great problem of promoting the idea of God, even if you yourself believe it to be untrue.  What happens when those you have duped also cease to believe?            In Auden’s poem on the death of Yeats, we have the line – one of my favourite in poetry – ‘He became his admirers’.            With this instance, there is no question of pretence.  Yeats unquestionably existed.  Through his poetry he can, in a sense, still survive.  But that is only if there are supporters to keep publishing his poems and to persuade people of the value of reading them.  Yeats can now do nothing for himself; without others, he is dead.            This is exactly, I think, the point made by Nietzsche about the death of God: the only difference being that the existence of Yeats is a matter of fact, and the existence of God is a matter of opinion.  Nietzsche’s God, it would be truer to say, is the equivalent not of Yeats, but of his poetry.  God and the poems are each a mental construct, kept alive by the efforts of admirers.  If people cease to be admirers, if they stop thinking about God or the poetry, then God and the poems die.              In Peter Pan, any time that a child says, “I don’t believe in fairies” then a fairy drops dead. This is a slightly different instance.  Unlike Nietzsche’s God, fairies are deemed to exist.  Unlike Yeats, they are still alive: until an expression of scepticism.   But they cannot survive on their own; they need the efforts of believers to keep them going.            Compare this with the situation of oxygen.  Suppose I say that – because I can’t see it – I don’t believe in it.  Oxygen, however, will continue to exist: its survival does not depend on its visibility or on my state of belief about it.            Which of theses instances best represent the survival of the Church? Let us return to my friend’s conception: a Victorian Gothic building, table manners, King’s College Choir on TV at Christmas.  He bears the Church no ill will; he probably even has a sneaking fondness for it.  He would compare it to the hansom cab: the best form of transport in its day, but now superseded by the taxi and appropriate only to the Museum of Transport..  Anything the Church once did can now be done better by the secular state: state education and state medicine, the Civil Service, social workers, psychiatrists.            And so on.  And I agree with him.  If its works are the sum of what the Church is, then the Church has no future.To all this, the believer can only say that outcome is being confused with essence. It’s like going to the National Gallery so that you can eat in the restaurant.  Or going to Macdonalds so you can check out the art work.  Or going to a party so you can meet the other guests and ignore the host.“...and the gates of death will not close on it.” (Matthew 16:18).  The most straightforward answer is that the Church will survive, however precariously, because Christ promised it would. And Christ is God. And God keeps promises.  But that is an answer to satisfy only those who accept the divinity of Christ.              But what, exactly, is meant by the Church?   Perhaps the difficult parable of the sheep and the goats is helpful here.   Some of the sheep, you will remember, are puzzled to be among the saved, and some of the goats are equally puzzled not to be.              The situation of the goats may be explained by St Augustine’s idea of the visible and invisible church.  Not all within the church are genuine believers, but God can see what human eyes cannot.              The sheep situation can be explained by the theologian Karl Rahner’s extension of the invisible – ie genuine - church to the whole human race.  Among those who have never had the opportunity to hear about Christ there are invisible Christians, saved by grace.              I like that thought myself, contentious though it is.  The ‘Church’ as I would thus define it is the collective  body of those who have, knowingly or unknowingly, responded to Christ, and which undertakes some – although by no means all – of God’s work in the world.  Within the specific geographical context of England, there are members of this church within the Church of England, but also outside it; and members of the Church of England who are not of this church.                That, I suppose, is the best answer I can give.  The Church of England may or may not survive, but the Church in England will.  Because it has Christ’s promise.

The "Heaviest Album" I've Ever Heard No Longer Exists

Racer asked all Ripple scribes to write about the "heaviest" album they have heard.  I generally have the same opinion about "Best" and "Most" designations that I have about "Top Ten Lists" - each choice is in the eye of the beholder and adds nothing to the discourse about music. However, I had a different, fundamental, definitional problem with this assignment -what constitutes a "heavy" album?Merriam-Webster provides no less than fourteen meanings for "heavy."  Certain definitions I immediately discounted as not compatible with Racer's intent or as otherwise implausible, such as,5 a : borne down by something oppressive : burdened   b : pregnant; especially : approaching parturition6 a : slow or dull from loss of vitality or resiliency : sluggish    b : lacking sparkle or vivacity : drab   c : lacking mirth or gaiety : doleful   d : characterized by declining prices7    : dulled with weariness : drowsy*  *  *10  : producing goods (as coal, steel, or chemicals) used in the production of other goods 11 a : having stress —used especially of syllables in accentual verse      b : being the strongest degree of stress in speech12 : relating to theatrical parts of a grave or somber nature13  : long 9 That left seven possible definitions which had at least four different meanings:The first definition is:1. a : having great weight; also : characterized by mass or weight      b : having a high specific gravity : having great weight in proportion to bulk     c (1) of an isotope : having or being atoms of greater than normal mass for that element (2) of a compound : containing heavy isotopesThe definition is akin to some of the many concepts in Merriam-Webster's eighth definition: 8   : greater in quantity or quality than the average of its kind or class: as   a : of unusually large size or amount    *  *  *    l : of large capacity or outputIf by "heavy" Racer meant me to write about the album of the greatest weight or mass, it would probably be Herbert von Karajan's Complete Recordings on Deutche Grammaphon. It is a 240-disc Japanese set that features two CDs of rehearsals, 100 and 200 page books (in Japanese), and a wooden cabinet-style box. However, I tend to doubt that weight or mass is the definition Racer had in mind. The second Merriam-Webster definition for "heavy" is:2.: hard to bear; specifically : grievous, afflictive If this is what Racer meant by "heavy" then the "heaviest" album I ever heard was Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band's debut album. It is characterized by nine tracks of incoherent screams, grunts and wheezes, shrilly backed by Ringo Starr and John Lennon.  Still, I don't think this is what Racer was looking for when he asked us to write about our "heaviest" album.  The third Merriam-Webster definition is:      3  : of weighty import : serious This definition differs little in concept from the fourteenth definition:14 : important, prominent Using this definition I would choose the 1990 release of the Complete Recordings of Robert Johnson.  No guitar player and blues pioneer has ever had as much influence on modern blues, rock, jazz music and guitar as Johnson.  Yet, I don't think Racer was looking for an article on the most important album we have heard. The fourth definition is:4   : deep, profound Depending on one's perspective this definition is similar to Merriam-Webster's seventh definition:9 a : very rich and hard to digest    b : not properly raised or leavened It also embodies the following concepts that are part of the eighth definition: 8  . . . b. of great force     *  *  *           k : more powerful than usual for its kind This sounds more like what Racer was seeking - a column on what we perceive as the deepest, most profound album we have ever heard.  For me, that album no longer exists.In 1889, the father of the Gramophone, Emile Berliner, recorded the first record album and then destroyed it.  It was that album that pioneered sound recordation and ushered in the era of the modern vinyl record album.  Yet, no one alive today had ever heard what was actually recorded since the album no longer exists.In 2012, Patrick Feaster, a sound historian at Indiana University, was at the Bloomington Herman B. Wells Library looking for a photograph of the earliest known recording studio to illustrate his lecture on Thomas Edison's sound recordings.  As he paged through an 1890 German magazine he came upon an article on the gramophone.  When he turned to the article he found it to be illustrated with an actual paper print of the original first known album.The album print had no relief.  It was a simple, flat, two dimensional facsimile of the original recording.  Feaster, however, is an expert in rescuing records from photographs.  Through enhancement and imaging software, calculation of shadow lengths, etc., Feaster was able to establish a sound profile for the original recording. He was then able to recreate the actual sound from the long lost first record album.  The first recorded album contains a recitation of Friedrich Schiller's German ballad Der Handschuh:Vor seinem LöwengartenDas Kampfspiel zu erwartenSaß König FranzUnd um ihn die Großen der KroneUnd rings auf hohem BalkoneDie Damen in schönem KranzIt is difficult to understand and hear.  The sound is scratchy, just terrible.  The album includes poetry, an acapella song and Berliner and his fellow scientist Louis Rosenthal counting to 20 in several different languages.    It is not the content of the album that makes it the "heaviest" I have heard.  Rather, it is the deep and profound impact of this recording on the history of music.  It is the progenitor of every record album ever made.  Before Berliner made this album music was only a live experience.  You couldn't bring it home and play it over and over again.  This album forever changed that paradigm. It led to vinyl records, tape, CD's, DVD's, computer hard drives and every other form of data storage device.   Now, that is the "heaviest" album yet it does not exist.- Old School

Take a look back at the pivotal Forrest Griffin-Stephan Bonnar fight from the first TUF finale

By now, you have heard of the important bout between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar at the first "The Ultimate Fighter" finale. It was on April 9, 2005, and happened at a time when the UFC needed a big win to keep going. The fight was fun, exciting and neither fighter gave up for even a second. It won the UFC many fans when paying customers was what the promotion needed most.

Now, eight years later, Griffin and Bonnar are retiring after long careers with the UFC. The promotion now has a network television deal after moving on from Spike. Bonnar and Griffin will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame this week, so they're inviting a look back to the fight that meant so much. Is it how you remembered?

Carlos Ruiz has a .583 OPS over 43 games.  Start a Google search for black market Adderall.Jimmy Rollins current OPS of .669 and 9 stolen bases are the lowest of his career, and he's not getting any younger.Michael Young, who Sir Alden proclaims to be "great in the 2 hole", has hit into 17 double plays.  If by making extra outs and squashing scoring opportunities is great, then, yeah sure.Laynce Nix, who has appeared in 72 games, has a .192 average and .532 OPS.  The 2 year pact that Amaro inked him to was the first guaranteed contract of his career (which began in 2003).Rumor mill is saying the Phillies are after Justin Ruggiano of the Marlins.  He's currently batting .202/.650, so I'm not sure why they are seeking his services.  Probably because Amaro is an idiot.The Phillies bullpen is so horrible in both Philly and Lehigh Valley that the "best" option to be called up when Joe Savery hit the DL was Raul Valdes.  MLB bullpen ranks: 4.34 ERA (27th), WHIP 1.49 (29th), and 120 walks (6th worst, despite pitching the least amount of innings). WTF?!Jonathan Papelbon has blown 5 out of his last 12 save opportunities. Cole Hamels has a 4.16 ERA and 12 losses.  Get your shit together Ol' Girl Parts!The Phillies have the worst batting average and OPS (.190/.505) in baseball with the bases loaded.Ryan Howard's contract is horrible!  I know he's on the DL, so this is a bit out of place, but I felt like adding it anyway.  It's my blog after all.
