Spring Breakers

Harmony Korine director of Gummo, Trash Humpers  and writer of the highly acclaimed Kids will always split opinions and his movies are not for everybody, will Spring Breakers bring him to a more mainstream audience?  I'm not so sure, but read on. Faith, Candy, Brit and Cotty are four childhood friend who are looking to take a break from reality and go on spring break in Florida.  Trouble is that they don’t have nearly enough money to go.  So what do you do?  Well these girls decide that robbing a local restaurant is the best way to go.  It’s obvious from the start that these girls don’t give a damn about anything except having a good time.  They are part of the ‘I want it and I want it now’ generation.  So they take the coach down to Florida, rent mopeds and party hard.  Too hard as it happens, as they get busted for drugs.  After a couple of days in the local county jail, they are bailed out by local rapper, drug dealer and self-styled gangster, Alien brilliantly played by James Franco.  He takes them under his wing and introduces them to his world of excess.  These are at heart impressionable young girls, and they are soon sucked in by the charismatic Alien and go on a crime spree.  Alien’s success angers fierce rival and one time friend, Big Arch, who sets about Alien’s demise.  The girls start to slit up as they get sucked deeper and deeper into Alien’s world, building to the thrilling climactic shoot-out.Love him or hate him Harmony Korine sure does make interesting movies.  This is a highly sexual movie from the outset, with sexual imagery, sexual tension and sexual chemistry in every frame.  It is beautifully shot and the restaurant robbery is superb, showing what a good director he can be.  The performances from the girls are great fun and natural, clearly enjoying the chance to play against type.  Stand out performance though is James Franco’s Alien.  He is clearly channelling Gary Oldmans’s Drexl from True Romance.  Sporting dreads, grills and tat’s he is hypnotic and alluring but clearly a bad man to be around.  The superb soundtrack mixes hardcore dubstep from Skrillex, gangster rap and dreamy electro beats from Drive composer Cliff Martinez.  Some of the dialogue frequently gets repeated over and over and this can become a little bit annoying sometimes but this is a minor issue to what is Korine’s most accomplished outing yet and will stick with you for days after. If you are easily offended then this isn’t for you but if you go with an open mind there is a lot to be taken from this appealing and sometimes mesmerizing movie.  This is Scarface for a new generation.Score- 7/10
