THE GATES OF DEATH

A friend of mine, a religious sceptic, asked me  a while back if I think the Church will survive.            The problem with the question – he had in mind, I think, the dispute within the Church of England about women bishops: today, of course, it would be Same-Sex Marriage – is that by the word ’church’ he and I mean completely different things.            The question, in fact, is a bit like asking if God will survive.  If God is real, then the question is not worth asking.  If God is not real, then the question becomes not one of truth but of utility: is the ideaof God useful enough – socially, morally, politically – for the idea to survive?The same then applies to the Church.  Is the Church divine or human in its origin?  Is it the mystical bride of Christ, or is it a human institution: unquestionably useful in the past, but less definitely so now? Perhaps a few analogies would be helpful at this point.In the film El Cid the Cid is fatally wounded by an arrow, but to announce the fact would be to demoralise the Spanish army and encourage the Moors.  He is therefore strapped up dead onto his horse and rides out at as usual at the head of the army and to victory.            This solution, of course, is limited to the duration of the battle.  At some stage, someone apart from the perpetrators is going to realise the reality.  That is the great problem of promoting the idea of God, even if you yourself believe it to be untrue.  What happens when those you have duped also cease to believe?            In Auden’s poem on the death of Yeats, we have the line – one of my favourite in poetry – ‘He became his admirers’.            With this instance, there is no question of pretence.  Yeats unquestionably existed.  Through his poetry he can, in a sense, still survive.  But that is only if there are supporters to keep publishing his poems and to persuade people of the value of reading them.  Yeats can now do nothing for himself; without others, he is dead.            This is exactly, I think, the point made by Nietzsche about the death of God: the only difference being that the existence of Yeats is a matter of fact, and the existence of God is a matter of opinion.  Nietzsche’s God, it would be truer to say, is the equivalent not of Yeats, but of his poetry.  God and the poems are each a mental construct, kept alive by the efforts of admirers.  If people cease to be admirers, if they stop thinking about God or the poetry, then God and the poems die.              In Peter Pan, any time that a child says, “I don’t believe in fairies” then a fairy drops dead. This is a slightly different instance.  Unlike Nietzsche’s God, fairies are deemed to exist.  Unlike Yeats, they are still alive: until an expression of scepticism.   But they cannot survive on their own; they need the efforts of believers to keep them going.            Compare this with the situation of oxygen.  Suppose I say that – because I can’t see it – I don’t believe in it.  Oxygen, however, will continue to exist: its survival does not depend on its visibility or on my state of belief about it.            Which of theses instances best represent the survival of the Church? Let us return to my friend’s conception: a Victorian Gothic building, table manners, King’s College Choir on TV at Christmas.  He bears the Church no ill will; he probably even has a sneaking fondness for it.  He would compare it to the hansom cab: the best form of transport in its day, but now superseded by the taxi and appropriate only to the Museum of Transport..  Anything the Church once did can now be done better by the secular state: state education and state medicine, the Civil Service, social workers, psychiatrists.            And so on.  And I agree with him.  If its works are the sum of what the Church is, then the Church has no future.To all this, the believer can only say that outcome is being confused with essence. It’s like going to the National Gallery so that you can eat in the restaurant.  Or going to Macdonalds so you can check out the art work.  Or going to a party so you can meet the other guests and ignore the host.“...and the gates of death will not close on it.” (Matthew 16:18).  The most straightforward answer is that the Church will survive, however precariously, because Christ promised it would. And Christ is God. And God keeps promises.  But that is an answer to satisfy only those who accept the divinity of Christ.              But what, exactly, is meant by the Church?   Perhaps the difficult parable of the sheep and the goats is helpful here.   Some of the sheep, you will remember, are puzzled to be among the saved, and some of the goats are equally puzzled not to be.              The situation of the goats may be explained by St Augustine’s idea of the visible and invisible church.  Not all within the church are genuine believers, but God can see what human eyes cannot.              The sheep situation can be explained by the theologian Karl Rahner’s extension of the invisible – ie genuine - church to the whole human race.  Among those who have never had the opportunity to hear about Christ there are invisible Christians, saved by grace.              I like that thought myself, contentious though it is.  The ‘Church’ as I would thus define it is the collective  body of those who have, knowingly or unknowingly, responded to Christ, and which undertakes some – although by no means all – of God’s work in the world.  Within the specific geographical context of England, there are members of this church within the Church of England, but also outside it; and members of the Church of England who are not of this church.                That, I suppose, is the best answer I can give.  The Church of England may or may not survive, but the Church in England will.  Because it has Christ’s promise.

Local man guilty of dog-at-large in pit bull attack case

OHIO -- A New London woman testified Tuesday a brown pit bull came at her, bit her and knocked her down, causing injuries.The defendant, Aaron Hyde, 34, of Main Street, New London, countered that the dog that he had been looking after was playing with a neighbor's dog, the victim got in between the two, was tripped and sustained injuries as a result of a fall.In the end, Judge Eric Weisenburger found Hyde guilty of having a dog at large, a minor misdemeanor, and fined him $150. The judge gave Hyde 30 days to pay the fine.The man could have paid $85 after receiving the ticket for the minor misdemeanor offense. But instead he opted to take the matter to court.Tuesday's 30-minute trial included two witnesses for the state. Hyde, who was representing himself, testified on his behalf, but did not call any witnesses."Given the evidence, that was the only verdict that the judge could find," Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Richard Woodruff, who was representing the state, said after the trial.When asked for his reaction, Hyde called the verdict a "f***ing lie" and he also accused the media of lying, using more profanity.New London Patrolman Kris Pinkerton testified that on July 20, he was dispatched to a salon on East Main Street in the village in reference to a dog bite. There, he found the victim with a towel on her head and leg. He added he noticed injuries on her body and the woman told him a dog had bitten her in the area of Hyde's home.Pinkerton responded to the home."He was very remorseful," the patrolman told the court. He added Hyde told him he was inside the house at the time and didn't see the brown pit bull. Pinkerton also said the defendant told him he was the "keeper of the dog," since the owner is either in jail or prison.Pinkerton said Hyde's story was mostly consistent with the police report. The exception was at first, Hyde said the pitbull and the neighbor's dog was fighting, and later used the word "playing."The victim, who lives on Hooker Street in New London, also testified for the state. She said she was walking by Hyde's home when "the dog (came) at me and then he attacked me (and) knocked me down."She added she was bitten on the right knee and suffered "shoulder burns" and bruises from falling.The woman said a neighbor boy responded when she hollered for help as the pitbull continued to bark at her. The 12-year-old boy, who also testified for the state Tuesday, came to her aid and chased the pitbull away, she said.The woman said she was able to walk over to a nearby salon where her daughter works, and an employee called police and an ambulance."I was bleeding so bad and all," the woman said.The boy, a neighbor of Hyde's, said he saw the woman walking on the sidewalk and Baby (the pitbull) bit her. The youngster said he had his own dog, Midnight, on a leash, getting ready to take him for a walk. He added that Midnight and Baby "used to play in the backyard a lot."The youth further testified that Baby began barking at his dog and bit the victim.Hyde questioned whether Midnight was on a leash. The defendant also claimed that it wasn't the boy who helped the woman up, but his daughter.Hyde said his daughter was watching the boy and his family at the time. He was inside cleaning, while his daughter was watching the boy and his family at his home."My neighbor's dog entered my yard and provoked my dog and the two of them were fighting," Hyde previously told the Reflector. "I'm in a wheelchair, so I couldn't get out there in time to break it up.""Dalton was at my house," he said, referring to the boy. Baby and Midnight were "play fighting" in his front yard, the victim got between the two dogs, tripped, fell and sustained injuries."You didn't see that happen?" “The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis – A Different Kind of Heaven

C.S. Lewis is rightfully known in the literary community as being one of the most ingenious authors of all time, always finding original ways to convey his thoughts, hypotheses and ideas. The Screwtape Letters are certainly a very good example of what he can achieve. It is a short and very simple novel with only one actual character: the devil called Screwtape. The story revolves around the letters Screwtape is writing to his beloved nephew, Wormwood, and in them he provides advice on how to better tempt humans into following devilish ways rather than angelic ones. Lewis uses this set up to explore a number of different topics revolving around the eternal battle of good against evil, including where morality, faith and temptations fit into the scheme. Though the read was fairly short, I loved every single second of it. It is one of those carefully-crafted satirical comedies in which every phrase is a joke and a reference in itself, and where reading in-between the lines always pays off with new and unexpected jokes. The subject itself, the act of a senior devil coaching a younger one to “secure the damnation” of a human, is already a premise that promises to be rich in content and possible jokes. What really brings the laughs though is the nonchalant and plaintive way in which Screwtape goes into the problems plaguing devils such as himself who are just trying to make it through a day in hell.All humor aside though, The Screwtape Letters may very well be one of the most thoughtful explorations of religious faith and morality in humans. Screwtape spends a considerable amount of time discussing (or rather, writing about) the nature of the “line of work” devils are in, and how even though things may not seem fair to humans, they make sense according to the devils’ playbook. As was previously-mentioned, a number of different themes are explored in this story (most notably morality and temptation), ultimately paving the way for the answer as to what it means to have true faith.All things considered, I would only recommend The Screwtape Letters to those of you who prefer a more old-school type of comedy, something with more irony and satire rather than randomness and crude jokes. Train derailment closes Port of Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. -- Firefighters used foam to clean up ethanol that leaked from a CSX train that derailed at the Port of Tampa.

The main portion of the port remained closed and may stay blocked off for much of the day after Tampa Fire Rescue officials say at least 12 rail cars derailed early Thursday.

The train was coming into the port at 1 a.m. when it left the tracks, pulling 12 cars off of the rails -- and sending 10 of those completely onto their sides, according to fire department spokesman Capt. Lonnie Benniefield.

Responders found three of the cars leaking ethanol, a flammable liquid that's often mixed with gasoline to fuel cars and trucks. When it's shipped by rail, ethanol is usually stored in a form that is more flammable than gasoline.

Hazmat-trained firefighters have laid a coating of foam on top of the spill to keep it from catching fire.

The toppled train is blocking the main entrance to the Port of Tampa.

Benniefield said equipment to place the rail cars back on the tracks is being transported from Atlanta to Tampa by railroad company CSX. Righting the entire train could take until late Thursday or early Friday.

No one was hurt in the train derailment, which was originally reported as involving 15 cars. Benniefield said it's not clear yet why the train jumped the tracks. CSX and government agencies are expected to investigate the accident.

Ethanol typically breaks down within a few weeks in the environment, so the impact to the soil and groundwater may be limited.

Last night in the Tigers-White Sox game, Detroit second baseman Hernan Perez smacked a shot into the left-center gap.

As the ball rolled to the wall, center fielder Alejandro De Aza closed in on it, but at the last second left fielder Dayan Viciedo cut him off to make the play.

Unfortunately, that play never happened.

Instead, Viciedo fumbled the ball three times…

And then threw it to no one, allowing Perez to score. It was marked as a triple and an error, but it was really more like a double and then a demonstration of total indifference and incompetence.

And that's how baseball is played in Chicago, everybody.

I can think of no group more worthy of support by us than for the Lutheran Church of South Sudan. They are poorer than a church mouse--at least a church mouse has a roof over its head. Folks, please take this info to your pastors and church councils. Jordan Long was active in the Rochester area before going back to South Sudan in 2009. He is a solid person. More than 30 churches were gathered under him within two years, if he had resources he could do immense work. As it is his pastors are on foot and have to walk from village to village. It is a real building from the ground up situation. Most of the congregations do not even have hymnbooks.– Pr. Eric J. Swensson
